Dodge was the last manufacturer to enter the pony car division in the
United States market. But everyone can say that Dodge has wisely spent
their time in crafting their entry excellently – the Dodge Challenger.
Released by the Dodge, a division of Chrysler Corporation, the
Challenger was well-appreciated by the car enthusiast and the buying
public. Though it was strongly based on Plymouth Barracuda’s new
E-body, its wheelbase is two inches bigger and it received a different
sheetmetal.
In 1970, the year it was introduced, Dodge Challenger gained 80,000
sales. Despite this success, Dodge Challenger didn’t escape the
criticisms thrown by the press. Plus, the pony car market was already
on its last legs when the Challenger arrived. These are the reasons why
Challenger lasted only for five years. After 1974 model year, the
production of Dodge Challenger finally ended. Over Dodge Challenger’s
lifetime, there are 165,500 units sold.
The Dodge Challenger came with a host of engine choices including 225
in3 slant 6, 318 in3 LA V8, 340 in3 LA V8, 360 in3 B V8, 440 in3 RB V8
and 426 in3 Hemi V8. Among these engines, the 440 and the 426 were
recognized as the most desirable.
The famous Dodge Challenger T/A or Trans Am is a model of Dodge
Challenger that’s produced only in 1970. It was a racing homologation
car powered by a specially tuned Six-Pack version of the 340 cubic inch
(5.6L) engine. Challenger T/A features a fiberglass lift-off hood with
a giant hood scoop and “megaphone” exhaust outlets installed in front
of the rear wheels. Also available is “Rallye” suspension package as
well as different-sized wheels for the front and back and having a very
thick rubber on the rear.
Through 1971 model year, Dodge Challengers are available on
either hardtop coupes or convertibles. Its performance model called the
R/T or Road/Track is offered in both body styles. The available options
were a limited slip differential, manual transmission, engines, steeper
rear axle ratios, shaker scoop, leather seats, vinyl roof and a smaller
“formal” rear window.
