Chrysler set the benchmark for modern minivans in 1984 with the
introduction of the Dodge Caravan along with the Chrysler Town and
Country and Plymouth Voyager. Although these three vehicles were named
differently, they shared many features and components, including the
Chrysler S platform and later, the AS platform and their engines. The
longer version of the Caravan and the Voyager, introduced in 1987 were
called the Grand Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Grand Voyager. The longer
versions had longer wheelbase and bigger space, about six inches bigger
than the smaller models.
In the 70s, there were other Chrysler vehicles that used the Caravan
and Voyager nameplates. In Europe, they were called as the Chrysler
Voyager and Chrysler Caravan. These were full size passenger vans based
in the Dodge Sportsman van. Base models can accommodate twelve persons
inside while the stretched version can seat up to fifteen individuals.
The Plymouth voyager was the first Plymouth vehicle to have a truck’s
body after many decades. The Voyager name has also been used on many
station wagons since the 1940s before the Chrysler Town & Country
was introduced.
So far, there are four generations of Dodge Caravan. The second
generation was introduced in 1991, the third in 1996 and the fourth in
2001. Each generation of the Dodge Caravan is a proof of Dodge’s
dependability. The 1985 Caravans and the Voyagers were included in the
Car and Drive magazine’s Ten Best List. In 1996, the Dodge Caravan was
Motor Trend’s Car of the Year and still among Car and Driver’s Ten Best
List through 1997.
Through the years, the Dodge Caravan and its twin models went through
many changes, upgrades and enhancements. Almost yearly, the engine
increases in size and power output. Also, the cars were redesigned and
were equipped with more parts for added style, safety and comfort. The
Chrysler AS platform was used from 1991 through 1996. The third
generation was based on the Chrysler NS platform and the fourth on the
Chrysler RS platform.
