Dodge Aspen
Prior to 1928, Dodge was known as the Dodge Brother Motor Vehicle Company, but even before the Dodge brothers built this company, they were already building a sound reputation in the industry as manufacturer of high quality bearings and other parts. Then after a while, Henry Ford approached the Dodge brothers to help finance the Ford Motor Company. The Dodge brothers agreed to help Ford establish his company but soon, they decided to make their own line of autos using their own name. Today, Dodge is part of the DaimlerChrysler Company and continues its legacy, which it started almost a century ago.
Dodge is known for its dependable and excellent engineered cars; however, not all Dodge cars received warm response from the users. The Dodge Aspen was one of its short-lived autos due to poor sales. Unfortunately, Dodge Aspen's counterpart, the Plymouth Volaré suffered the same plight. The two were replaced by Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant, which successfully brought Dodge to its former status in the industry.
The Dodge Aspen cars were produced only from 1976 until 1980 in place of the earlier Dodge Dart model. They were mid-size cars offered in two-door coupe, four-door sedan and station wagon versions. At the start, Dodge Aspen and its Plymouth sibling, the Volaré was doing fairly well. In fact, the Dodge Aspen was designated as the Car of the Year for 1976 by Motor Trend magazine. In the following years, complaints especially on fender rust began to plague Dodge. Some problems on the brake, suspension, ignition and fuel systems were also encountered.
Problems on the Dodge Aspen were primarily due to rush production and problems on quality control. This car was not a total failure because it possessed qualities of a reliable car; moreover, of a tested Dodge vehicle. Dodge Aspen's drivetrain was considered as extraordinarily reliable and tough. From its F-body platform, various new platforms were created including that which was used on famous Chrysler cars, the Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury.
