Dodge Alternator

Dodge Alternator Modern alternators like Dodge Alternator have greater capacity compared with generators. Older car makes used generators instead of alternators. Old generators have wound stater to produce a magnetic field to move the armature or the revolving coil of wire. On the edge of the armature are electrically insulated single brass segments that serve as the supplier of current to other auto parts to keep the vehicle moving. Each segment is connected to the armature shaft which is considered as a mechanical weakness sine as the armature rotates at high rpm, the centrifugal force produced can cause explosion which can destroy the segments. Explosion can also be prevented by having slower acceleration but it can produce low engine rpm to generate the needed current.

The modern alternator also has the same features but the function of each part is made much easier because of new and advance components. Like the generator it also has moving and stationary wire coils. The moving coil or the rotor generates a moving field while the stationary wire coils give off the power. The moving or rotating wires generates a magnetic field together with alternating current that would depend on the speed of the coils. The stationary coils on the other hand are made up of three stationary windings to produce three-phase alternating current. The former responsibility of the commutator to convert AC to DC power is now performed by the alternator diodes positioned in the full-wave bridge rectifier circuit.

Regular check-up of your alternator is needed to avoid failures in performance. The failures usually happen in stages. The first stage of failure usually occurs on the stationary windings. The diodes on the windings can fail one at a time. Its condition can be checked by simply using a voltmeter. Be sure to turn off all the auto parts and car accessories that need power before using the voltmeter on the car. A simple noise can also be a sign of alternator failure. The cause of distracting noise must be properly directed or else the wrong part may be tampered and cause further problems and defects.
