The Chrysler Voyager comes from a long line of DaimlerChrysler minivans which started as Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager in 1983 and 1984 respectively. The Voyager's predecessors are hailed as the first modern minivan in the automotive history at the same time one of the few vehicles that produced a new market segment.

In 1987, the Dodge Caravan was introduced in a longer platform that became the Grand Caravan/Grand Voyager which was still based on the Chrysler S platform. The vehicle can seat up to 12 people. The stretched version can house up to 15 people. Take note that the Chrysler Voyager was not introduced in the United States until 2001 while the minivan used the name Chrysler Voyager in Europe first.

Still before the release of the Chrysler Voyager in the US, several other vehicle was produced including the Chrysler Town and County. The following versions of minivans prior to the Chrysler Voyager received a new NS and RS platform which was the same platform used by the Voyager.

The Voyager was only available in a short wheelbase model. It was last seen in 2003 which was replaced by the newer version, the Chrysler Town & Country.
