The Chevrolet Corvette was the original all-American sports car first
manufactured by Chevrolet in 1953. Today this car is built exclusively
at a General Motors plant located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Chevrolet
Corvettes carries a long history of melding exceptional handling and
brutal amounts of engine power into an affordable package which is most
cases, can be as half as expensive as more prominent marques with
similar capabilities.
When it comes to engine power, Chevy
Corvettes tend to emphasize simplicity over technical complexity.
Because most of the competing marques rely on smaller-displacement
engines with complex double-overhead cams, variable-valve timing,
four-valve and five-valve heads, and turbochargers, the Chevrolet
Corvette made identical or better power using a simple overhead-valve
head which comes with only two pushrod-actuated valves per cylinder
together with a larger displacement engine. It is cheaper to produce
and the relatively simple pushrod V8 engine is equally lighter and
physically smaller than the more complex arrangements. For that reason,
it lacks sophistication which many sees it as a negative factor.
However, no one can deny the power, the efficiency, and the
affordability of the Corvette’s design.
So far, there have been six generations of the Chevrolet Corvette and
they are generally referred to as versions C1 to C6. The first
generation started in 1953 and ended in 1962. The second generation or
mid-year generation started in 1963 and ended in 1967. The third
generation that has the distinction of being introduced to the motoring
public in an unorthodox and unintentional fashion started in 1968 and
ended in 1982. The fourth generation was introduced at the close of
1982 and ended in 1996 while the fifth generation started in 1997 and
ended with the 2004 model year.
Chevrolet Corvettes has won many awards. It was the Motor Trend
magazine’s Car of the Year (1984 and 1998). The C4 and the C5 has been
included in the annual Ten Best list in the Car and Driver magazine.
And the C6 was nominated recently as the North American Car of the
Year.
