The Cadillac Allante is perfect for those fortunate few who can write
their own rules. Unlike any ultra-luxury roadster that has come before
it, the Cadillac Allante has its countless features to show off. This
vehicle was Cadillac's first venture into the luxury roadster market.
It was first introduced in March 1987 and had its primary competitor,
the Mercedes Benz 560 SL.
This ultra-luxury roadster when first introduced had a 4.1 liter port
fuel injected (PFI) V8 engine which is based on the standard Cadillac
throttle-body injected V8 engine block but it was later replaced by a
4.5 liter PFI V8 rated at 200 horsepower. This powerful engine lasted
as Allante's power source until 1993, its last year of production when
the Allante was replaced by a more powerful engine, the Allante
received the 4.6 liter Northstar DOHC engine with VVT rated at 295
horsepower.
The chassis of the Allante and its engine as well were taken from the
Cadillac Eldorado. Actually, Allante's chassis was made in Detroit then
it was loaded onto specially equipped jets and then shipped to Italy
where the body of the Allante was mounted to the chassis.
Its hand-fitted leather seat covers featuring driver and passenger
ten-way electric power is also from Italy. Perhaps that's the reason
why the Cadillac Allante was said to be modern in the true North
American sense yet retains all the sense of a classic Italian beauty.
Cadilllac's general manager said that the Allante was their test-bed
vehicle for it helped in figuring out the reliability of systems which
includes computer-command ride and traction control before they were
used in other Cadillac's cars. European road manners, Cadillac comfort
and convenience, that speaks Cadillac Allante.
