The operation of a Buick may actually seem normal
even if there’s a certain auto part missing. However, if it’s a vital
part such as valve cover, the effect is more than just seemingly being
noticed, but directly seen with the engine operation.
A Buick valve cover is a long and thin sheet metal, composite, plastic
or thermoplastic component that bolts onto the vehicle’s cylinder head.
They may come dressed with chrome, billet aluminum and or carbon fiber,
and still other could feature etched logo, flames and other designs on
their surfaces. But basically, it’s a removable cover that can be
adjusted and or detached from the cylinder head if valve adjustment is
necessary.
More than merely covering the valves and accentuating the engine
compartment, it’s also responsible of keeping the oil within the valve
train in order to lubricate the rocker arms. The pushrods of the valve
train is pumping the oil inside, subsequently dispersing the lubricant
underneath the valve covers. If the Buick valve covers are of low
quality, the lubricant is most likely to leak because of its weak
capacity of standing the pressure inside the valve train.
Oil leaks from the valve train in normally being caused by problematic
valve cover gaskets, not of valve cover itself. Unless of course if the
covers are already worn and corroded, or if the cover broke due to over
tightened valve cover screws. The leakage caused by any of these
problems will lead to another bigger problem. With the shortage or lack
of lubricant, the rocker arms will work stiffly and consequently get
damaged. And resulting to engine failure can be the hardest and costly
part.
Ensuring good condition of valve cover and valve gasket is the best
that owners can do. This is done by making auto check-up a habit.
Through manual pinching of the valve cover gasket, oil leakage can be
determined. Another way is to remove the gasket and putting the valve
cover back onto the cylinder head. When the valve cover and cylinder
head come into contact, the cover should sit flat. If it rocks, it is
bent, which means a need for replacement.
