Before the introduction of Buick Electra, two main Buicks dominated the top of the company's product range; the Buick Roadmaster and the Buick Limited which has been in the position for decades. Buick Electra officially entered the market in 1959 replacing the Roadmaster. In the same year, the Buick Electra 225 replaced the Buick Limited. The "225" represented the overall length of the vehicle in inches, which eventually earned the nickname of "deuce and a quarter."

In 1963, Buick decided to drop the Electra. The Electra 225 remained until 1977 when it was reduced in length that prompted the return of the 'Electra' badge. The engine remained powerful during the period with 385 and 455 ci V8s.

The next generation Electra came in 1985 with a GM platform and front wheel drive train with performance-oriented T-Type version. In the same year, the Electra series with a 3.8 L V6 also introduced the Park Avenue as an trim which had already appeared appeared in 1978 unofficially. Another model, the Electra Estate station wagon also appeared at the same period. In 1990, the Park Avenue trim officially replaced the Electra nameplate.

The Electra was significantly fast. On the second gear, it can run up to 80 mph smoothly. The interior was designed for comfort. The exterior was very stylish with a unique contour from the grille all the way to the tail light. The long hood/big trunk and smooth fender truly defined the vehicle.
