Buick is among General Motor’s brands of automobiles. It is
manufactured in the United States and in China and is sold in Canada
and Israel as well. Buick was at first an independent car manufacturer,
founded by David Dunbar Buick in 1903. The Buick Motor Company was
known for making the first overhead valve engine; however, in spite
this achievement, the company was struggling hard to cope with the
demands of time. It faced losses and soon, Buick sold his company to
William Durant, the one responsible for making Buick, America’s largest
automobile manufacturer.
Although today Buick is just one of
the of the many car makes produced by General Motors, the parent
company GM was actually born out of Buick’s success. During Buick Motor
Company’s heyday, William Durant was able to earn enough money that
enabled him to acquire more shares from different auto makers. He
called his mega-group of companies that included Buick, as General
Motors. At first, each automobile company under GM competed with one
another. Durant addressed this problem by having each company target
only a particular market. Thus, Chevrolet and GMC specialized on
trucks, Cadillac on high class luxury cars and other makes on other
types of vehicles.
The Buick division was close to Cadillac in terms of luxury, prestige
and performance and stayed akin with the Oldsmobile cars in terms of
technical sophistication. It was intended for auto users who cannot
afford the high price of top-notch luxury vehicles like its sibling,
the Cadillac, but who have meticulous standards on quality and
performance as well. When it comes to style, Buick cars are not so
ostentatious but they are not so plain either and definitely not
ordinary. They are above the norm, above the middle class and above the
usual. This has made Buick succeed in the industry, which we all know
is highly competitive.
