Have you ever wondered why Audi have chosen the letter "S" to prefix the names of their high performance vehicle models? Many believe that the "S" stands for "Sport", which is definitely true, as it suggests the sporty, aggressive and powerful nature of Audi S models. The use of the letter, however, originated in the rally scene, when in 1985, Audi introduced to the motor sport world the Audi Sport Quattro S1. This simply shows that the Audi S models were really made to perform like true sports cars.

Audi had used the "S" model classification to denote a high performance car way back in 1992 with the Audi S4. But it was only in 1995 when the "S" badge was used for a high performance version of another vehicle. This was with the Audi S6, a high performance version of the already capable Audi A6. Actually, the Audi S6 was similar to the Audi S4 that it preceded. It was only renamed as such to clearly indicate its relation with the Audi A6.

The first generation of the Audi S6 was sold for only a year in the US, but the name of the said model was revived for the 2002 model year. Based on the Audi A6 4.2 Quattro, the 2002 Audi S6 carried with it the authoritative performance and amazing handling capabilities of the regular Audi A6 models. The S6, however, was designed to provide more than what the regular Audi A6 models can.

Equipped with high performance and powerful Audi S6 parts, the Audi S6 can definitely outclass the performance of the Audi A6. For one, the Audi S6 is equipped with a powerful 4.2-liter V8 engine that develops 340 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.
