When you see the letter S suffixed by a number in the name of an Audi
vehicle, then there's nothing to expect but aggressiveness, power and
performance. The "S" in the Audi S models actually stands for "Sport"
and their performance are comparable to that of the BMW M models. And
just like the BMW M models, Audi S models merge luxury and performance
in a single car; and you may well add the traditional Audi comforts to
those characteristics.
Among the Audi S Models, the Audi S4 was the first to appear.
The car was introduced in the US for the 1992 model year and shared its
chassis with the Audi 100. The Audi S4, however, performed better than
the 100, equipped with a 2.2-liter turbo-charged 5-cylinder engine that
outputs 230 horsepower. The model was offered until 1994, after which
it was renamed as the Audi S6 and offered as a high performance version
of the Audi A6.
In 2000, the Audi S4 was re-introduced, then in its second
generation form. It shared the same chassis with the Audi A4 but was
equipped with drive train and power train parts designed to boost the
A4's performance. At the core of the second generation Audi S4 is a
2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 250 hp of power and
258 ft-lbs of torque. The powerful engine was matched with either a
6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission unit.
The Audi S4 was again dropped after the 2002 model year, only
to reappear for 2004. For its third generation, the Audi S4 came more
powerful with a 4.2-liter V8 engine rated at 344 hp. It also sported a
new look, featuring the new single-frame grille style of the brand as
well as newly styled headlights. For 2006, the car would enter its
fourth generation, although only a facial restyle will be made without
any changes in the performance specifications of the car.
