How does an oxygen sensor work for your Acura? It
basically helps the emissions control system ensure less toxic exhaust
products, by measuring the oxygen amount that is to be used in the
combustion process. Quality and conditioned Acura oxygen sensor will
prevent that stinky smell of rotten egg and emergence of black smoke
from the exhaust, which indicates lesser amount of hydrocarbons,
nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide. As a subsequent reaction to the
performance quality of exhaust system with the help of the oxygen
sensor, engine damage would be prevented and the Acura engine will
bring good mileage and performance quality.
Efficient performing Acura oxygen sensor must possess certain
qualities. It should be sensitive only to oxygen property and
insensitive to any others to be able to measure it effectively. Another
is that, it must not have any influence to the measured property. An
oxygen sensor is a hollow tube which is divided into three compartments by
a U-shaped platinum-coated rod. This transducer or mechanism responds
to the oxygen by producing electrical signal. After obtaining the
needed data, it would be sent to a converter for an output which is
understandable by human. In most Acura models, this is done by vehicle
computer.
In operation, the oxygen sensor which is positioned in the exhaust pipe
accurately checks the red-hot exhaust hundreds of times per minute.
While in the process, the platinum coating of the sensor produces a
chemical reaction that leads to generation of voltage. This is then
used as signal for determining whether the mixture is lean or rich. As
the computer receives the data, it would make necessary adjustments and
trim down the mixture to achieve a balanced hydrogen, carbon content
and fuel ratio, or perfect ratio.
There is no particular amount of those elements required in order to
achieve perfect ratio. This aspect depends on the type of engine which
an Acura is equipped of, and of course with the type of oxygen sensor
it uses. For a gasoline engine, the perfect ratio air and gasoline
amount runs 14:7:1. The efficiency of the Acura oxygen sensor’s
performance is also affected by aspects such as altitude, air and
engine temperature, barometric pressure and engine load.
