For it not to pull out when tightened, it is pressed into the hub from the inboard side. It threads onto the wheel lugs, clamping the wheel rim that is located at the hub and log nuts. It is a must that your wheel lug nuts are securely tightened, otherwise the wheel will come off. However, over tightening is not a good idea as this can prevent you from being able to change a flat tire. Wheel lug nut proper installation requires that the wheel lug torque is set to the recommended specifications for your vehicle. You can refer to your vehicle's shop manual to know these torque specifications or get it from your vehicle dealer. With an accurate torque wrench, finish the lug tightening. You can make use of a crisscross sequence until they have reached their proper torque value. Take an extra care however because if you over torque the wheel, there is the tendency that you strip a lug nut, stretch or break a wheel stud, and even cause the wheel, brake rotor and/or brake drum to distort. As an additional advice, you should re-torque newly installed wheels after traveling the first 50 – 100 miles. This is very important since as the wheels are breaking in, they may compress slightly allowing their lugs to lose some of their torque. And since the thickness of an alloy wheel can differ from Original Equipment wheels, you must also verify that the threads will be engaged by the lug nuts or bolts.
