The Replacement Valve Cover is one important part of the valve system. This ensures that the liquid from the valves will not spill over since a spillage could mean something negative on the performance of a vehicle. The valve cover works hand in hand with the valve cover gasket in ensuring that no spillage will happen. The valve cover gasket, on the other hand, fits between the cylinder head and the bottom of the valve cover.
The gasket is the one responsible for sealing the oil inside the valve cover to prevent leaks while the engine is running. The symptoms of a leaking valve cover gasket would be an oil leak down the cylinder head of the engine. A valve cover gasket can be made from rubber, cork, or silicone. Different engines may have up to four valve cover gaskets.
Right above the gasket is where you can see the valve cover. The improper installation of this cover is oftentimes the cause of leaks, spills, and sputters inside the engine. The removal and the subsequent installation of the valve cover will not take up too much time. There are several types of materials which are used in making these covers. The frequently used materials are plastic and aluminum. The plastic valve covers are easy to manage and operate, though their efficiency can be compromised if there is an insufficient amount of torque on the bolts or if some of the bolts are tightened in place while others are loosely mounted. The valve covers made from aluminum, on the other hand, can give longer service. Too much oil leaks, especially on the air filter tray, is the common drawback of the aluminum material. The aluminum-made covers may require drilling or tapping of holes in the cylinder head, so they may require a much longer time for installation.
