Hays Flywheel
The flywheel is one of components of the clutch. It is a large steel or aluminum disc that is bolted to the crankshaft of the engine. It is very important to the vehicle's operation since it performs various functions. It serves as balancer for the engine, dampens the engine vibrations caused by the firing of each cylinder, and provides a smooth machined friction surface that the clutch can contact. However, the flywheel's main function is to transfer torque from the engine to the transmission. It has teeth along its circumference to allow the starter motor to contact when turning the engine over. The Hays Aluminum Flywheel is perhaps one of the favorite choices of many road and drag racers. This particular performance part, which is well-suited for the Ford line of vehicles, is machined from 7075 T-6 forged billet aluminum. This high strength alloy surpasses all material specifications as to strength and centrifugal distortion. All Hays Aluminum Flywheels feature a replaceable steel or bronze heat shield friction surface and are drilled to accept either the Borg or Becker or Long Style clutch pattern. The ring gear is securely mounted with welded tabs that are riveted to the flywheel to prevent spinning. This particular performance part is certified under SFI specification 1.1. This flywheel is thicker than stock and may require a bell housing spacer. Using the Lakewood bell housing will eliminate interference.
