Ford Racing Short Shifter
There are a lot of misconceptions about the functions of the short shifter, but their true role is to decrease the throw by reducing the angle that the shifter shaft travels during its stroke between gears. By reducing the angle that the shaft travels through, the distance that your hand needs to cover when working between gears is also reduced. In many cases, the shifter shaft is redesigned to be shorter than the stock shaft in order to create a sportier look and feel. The geometry used in the short shifter differs from that of the stock shifter in order to reduce the distance that has to be moved by the upper section, where the shift knob threads on, to achieve the same degree of movement in the lower section where the shift rod is attached. This will ensure that though your hand is moving in a short distance, the transmission is fully engaged in every gear. The main pivot of the shifter lever is then repositioned on the shaft so that the lower section is not longer than the stock. With this in place, the end result is a shorter, more precise shift which requires a shorter hand movement to engage the next gear. The short shifter will also provide improved looks and feel as compared to the stock shifter. The Ford Racing Short Shifter, specially the one that will fit the Focus, boasts of a reengineered shift mechanism with an improved pivot ratio for a shorter throw. The part also features CNC machined steel shaft and billet aluminum reverse lock.
