A camshaft is an apparatus used in piston engines to operate poppet valves. It is consist of lobes which are synchronized with the crankshaft. Its function is to rotate and open and close the valves in the engine. Camshafts are usually located on top of the heads of the engine or they can also be located near the crankshaft. If it is located near the crankshaft, the rotation causes the lobes to press on pushrods. Meanwhile, the key components of every camshaft are the lobes. The lobes open and close the intake and exhaust valves in time with the motion of the piston. This happens every time the camshaft spins. Flat-tappet camshafts are more popular and less expensive. They are also generally constructed of cast iron and are induction-hardened to prevent wear. Roller camshafts, however, use a roller follower that allows the follower to roll over the face of the cam lobe.
