On the cup, the torque increases with the speed of the magnet's rotation. Consequently, an increase in the vehicle's speed twists the cup and the speedometer pointer against the spring. The pointer will remain immobile and pointing to the right number on the speedometer's dial when the torque due to the eddy currents in the cup is equal to that provided by the spring on the pointer shaft. The return spring is adjusted so that given revolutions speed of the cable matches to a specific speed indication on the speedometers.
