A measuring device that is used to basically measure the flow of electric current in a circuit of a vehicle is the ammeter. These electric currents are then measures in amperes. A moving iron ammeter usually uses either a piece or pieces of iron that moves when acted upon by an electromagnetic force of a fixed coil of heavy gauge wire. Such type of meter responds to both direct and alternating currents.

Modern ammeter designs today, like the Autometer ammeter that is widely used by vehicle owners are non mechanical, or are digital which uses an analog to digital converter. An ADC is read by a microcomputer, which performs the calculation to be able to display the current through a resistor. Autometer Ammeter varies in many different types. There’s a cobalt series with a blue illumination, illuminated needle, digital ammeter gauge and 2 1/16”-250 Amps and includes a LED digital display, 20 feet harness and current sensor.

Another is a cobalt series with a blue through dial illumination, illuminated orange needle, silver housing, digital ammeter gauge and 2 1/16”-250 Amps. It includes a LED digital display, current sensor and 20 foot harness. There’s also a sport comp series with white illumination around dial and includes a red and green bulb covers for a customized look. It has a chrome bezel, electric ammeter gauge, 2 5/8”-60 Amps, and use alternator having maximum output of 60 Amps or less. Finally, there is a traditional chrome series with white illumination around dial and includes a red and green bulb covers for a customized look. There’s one problem with the use of the Autometer ammeter, which is the need for it to be inserted onto the circuit and eventually becomes part of it. If the ammeter is placed in parallel with a circuit, the fuse might blow and will damage the meter causing an injury. Be sure to ask help from an expert to avoid further injuries and damages.
